Elaboration of the method of distant space determination of the phytoplankton productivity and composition for the purpose of eutrophication development control

The project is carried out in collaboration with the Nansen International Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (NIERSC) since 2007.

The aim of the project is the study of the regularities underlying the formation of heterogeneities on the Ladoga Lake water surface near the Valaam Archipelago associated with the extracellular phytoplankton production and the comparison between the sub-satellite observations and the data of space sensing.

Phytoplankton metabolites are analysed so as to identify the component substances and to decipher them down to the formula with the use of chromatography-mass spectrometry. The regularities of the substances' distribution are compared with the species composition and the abundance of the algae. The sampling is performed simultaneously with the scanning of the water surface of the contrasting zones (ripple and smooth surface) from space satellites; later space images are interpreted taking into account the observations in the nature.
